FIFA is dropping new NFT collections on Algorand and Polygon for the Saudi Club World Cup. Both collections offer holders the chance to access exclusive real-world events.
The NFT market has picked up significant traction throughout the last quarter of 2023, and FIFA has geared up to capitalise on it.
A December 11 announcement confirms that FIFA is launching two new NFT collections later this month for the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, which kicked off in Jeddah yesterday.
The first drop will feature 100 NFTs on FIFA+ Collect via Algorand, and will give holders the chance to win tickets to the FIFA World Cup 26 final game. This collection will drop on Friday, December 15.
A second, larger collection will feature 900 NFTs issued on the Polygon network – a surprising change from the company’s usual choice of Algorand. This collection will be “tied to physical items”, FIFA+ Collect announced on X, including two VIP experiences.
The second collection will be available on OpenSea on December 19, toward the end of the tournament.
The Saudi Club World Cup is a tournament which brings together teams from six of FIFA’s confederations, including teams such as Manchester City, Al Ahly and Club Leon.
The drops are the first of a new collaboration between FIFA and Web3 tech firm, Modex.
FIFA said that the collaboration with Modex will “demonstrate the benefits” that Web3 offers in terms of driving engagement and increasing fan participation.
FIFA Chief Business Officer, Romy Gai, said, “We are excited to embark on this transformative journey with Modex and take the FIFA+ Collect platform to new heights. Since launching, the platform has been immensely popular worldwide and fans from all countries now have the opportunity to own a piece of footballing history.”
He added, “These new launches, both this year and beyond, will provide football fans with a unique and innovative way to connect with the sport, while also contributing to the growth of the digital collectibles market.”
